Comprehensive Evaluation

Our comprehensive evaluation for myofunctional therapy is a detailed assessment designed to identify underlying orofacial muscle dysfunctions and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. During this examination, we will examine all the pillars of orofacial myology to gain a complete understanding of how these factors may be affecting your health.  This in-depth analysis allows us to address the root causes of issues and help us develop and maintain a course of action.
Sessions

Each myofunctional therapy treatment session is tailored to your individual progress and goals, focusing on exercises that retrain the muscles of the tongue, face and mouth for optimal function.  Sessions typically include guided practice of specific exercises to improve the areas of improvement.  We monitor your progress closely, making necessary adjustments and provide support and education to ensure you are building sustainable habits.  These sessions are engaging, collaborative and designed to empower you with the tools needed for long-term success in improving breathing, speech, sleep and oral function.
Maintenance

Maintenance is a crucial phase that ensures the long-term success and stability of the progress you have made throughout your treatment.  Once you have completed the core therapy sessions and achieved your goals, we transition into a maintenance plan that may include periodic check-ins, reinforcement exercises and ongoing support to help you retain proper oral and facial muscle function.  This phase helps prevent relapse, supports continued improvement, and ensures that healthy habits are consistently maintained in your daily life.

How Can Myofunctional Therapy Help?

At Function and Flow Myofunctional Therapy Clinic, our therapy includes the necessary elements designed to correct and habituate the main pillars of orofacial myology.

Nasal Breathing

Nasal breathing is a fundamental component of myofunctional therapy, playing a vital role in overall oral and airway health.  Breathing through the nose, rather the tongue, supports proper tongue posture, promotes optimal oxygen exchange, filters and humidifies the air and helps maintain balanced facial development, especially in children.  Chronic mouth breathing can contribute to issues like poor sleep quality, dental malocclusion and orofacial muscle dysfunction.  Therapy involves retraining the body to restore and maintain nasal breathing as a habitual pattern, using targeted exercises and habit correction to support long-term health and function.

Correct Tongue Posture at Rest

Correct tongue posture at rest is a key focus of myofunctional therapy and is essential for optimal oral function, facial development and airway health.  At rest, the tongue should be gently pressed against the roof of the mouth (palate) with the lips closed and teeth slightly apart.  Poor tongue posture, such as resting low in mouth or against the teeth, can contribute to issues like mouth breathing, speech difficulties,  misaligned teeth and even sleep-disordered breathing.  Myofunctional therapy helps retrain the tongue and orofacial muscles to adopt and maintain proper resting posture, leading to long-term improvements in overall health and function.

Lips together at Rest

Maintaining lips together at rest is an important goal in myofunctional therapy as it supports proper oral posture, nasal breathing and overall facial muscle balance.  When lips are gently closed and relaxed, it encourages the tongue to rest against the roof of the mouth and promotes breathing through the nose rather than the mouth.  Chronic open-mouth posture, where the lips remain apart at rest, can lead to or contribute to a range of issues such as mouth breathing, improper jaw development and muscle dysfunction.  Myofunctional therapy works to strengthen the muscles around the lips and retrain the body to keep the lips closed naturally, helping to create long-term improvements in function, appearance and overall health.

Correct Swallowing
(Oral Prep Phase)

The oral preparatory phase of swallowing is the first and crucial step in the swallowing process and it is a key focus in myofunctional therapy.  During this phase, food is chewed and mixed with saliva to form a cohesive bolus that can be safely and efficiently swallowed.  Proper tongue movement, lip seal and coordinated jaw function are essential during this stage.  Dysfunction in the oral prep phase, such as tongue thrusting, poor lip closure or inadequate chewing, can lead to inefficient swallowing, digestive issues and speech difficulties.   Myofunctional therapy targets these issues by retraining the orofacial muscles to work in harmony, promoting a correct and efficient swallow that supports overall health and function.
